Family Choir Participation Guide

Family Folk Choir

Parent & Family Participation Guide

Our choir is a place for connection, joy, and shared song
where all ages and voices come together in harmony.

To help us care for this space, here are a few simple guidelines:

Your Role as a Parent/Guardian

  • Join in the singing – Your presence and participation make the choir stronger.

  • Model kindness and patience – Children learn best by watching the grownups around them.

  • Encourage, don’t correct – Let your child explore their voice freely; leave the teaching to the facilitators.

  • Celebrate mistakes – They’re a natural part of learning for both you and your child; laugh together and keep singing.

Supporting Your Child

  • Help them feel prepared. Eat beforehand if needed, bring water, arrive on time, and settle in together.

  • Practice. Consider singing choir songs together between practices, as a way to deepen your musical connection and enrich your choir practice experiences as well.

  • Share the spotlight. Sometimes your child may lead; sometimes you will. Both matter.

  • Step back if needed. If you or your child are having a hard time, it’s okay to pause and take a break to breathe before rejoining.

Group Expectations

  • This is a participatory musical community — everyone joins in! Parents are responsible for caring for their younger children during choir time, as childcare is not provided.

  • Respect all voices — listen when it’s someone else’s turn, use encouraging words, and avoid criticism.

  • Support independence. Older kids (8+) who attend on their own must be ready to engage respectfully in a group setting.

Together We Create…
